Etched In Embers (the art of Wendy!)
Wendy Lee Bussard is a self-taught, Pennsylvania-based fine artist and the creative force behind Etched in Embers. Established around 2005, she is a prominent figure in the contemporary dark art and oddities subculture.
Rather than treating pyrography as a traditional craft, Wendy elevates wood burning into complex, high-contrast illustration. Her signature style relies on a unique mixed-medium approach, layering deeply burned wood panels with oil paints, watercolor, gouache, and encaustics (hot beeswax).
Driven by the concept of memento mori, Wendy’s work explores the “beauty in decay.” She blends anatomical elements, skeletons, and Victorian mourning imagery with vibrant botanical life, cats, and tarot themes. Today, she travels extensively across the United States, showcasing her work at fine art markets and the Oddities and Curiosities Expos.
